Alex Aiken - Honorable 5th Place
Written by Web Administrator
Tuesday, 22 January 2008
alex.jpgFrom St. Paul, MN
usfsavertthumb.pngAfter skating a short program not up to his personal standards, which put him in 6th place on Sunday, Alex Aiken skated his long program on Monday at the 2008 U.S. Figure Skating Championships at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.  Opening with an excellent triple flip/double toe combination, followed by a huge triple lutz/double toe combination, Alex skated a powerful long program completing five different triple jumps and a double axel.  His fall on the second triple lutz prevented him from receiving a higher technical score than 50.69 points.

Alex placed 2nd in FS with an overall score of 93.05.  Although his strong long program was not enough to put him on the podium, he finished in honorable 5th place in the Novice Men division.  Now he is planning on including triple/triple combinations and a triple axel in his program, and he is looking forward to competing at the junior level next year.

From Raleigh, NC:

The Novice Men rocked the house Thursday afternoon with their free programs at the 2008 Eastern Sectional Championships.

Alexander Aiken opened with a  soaring triple Lutz-double toe, and followed up with another triple Lutz, a triple Salchow and a double Axel. The height and quickness of his jumps warranted high marks and earned him second place in FS with 89.62 points. He finished in second place overall with 128.81 points,  behind Ross Miner (SC of Boston).

Dolensky

Alex will be competing in the 2008 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in St. Paul, MN.

Another Novice skater representing our club was Timothy Dolensky, who competed in the 2007 Junior Nationals. Tim finished honorably in 9th place overall with 92.48 points.

Novice Pairs skated their FS programs on Friday. Christopher Nolan of the AFSC with Julia Rodenas (University of Delaware FSC) finished fifth overall with 62.08 points and secured themselves the position of 1st alternate for the Eastern Section. With a notable support team cheering them on, the pair turned in an impressive performance for a partnership that is only three months old! Their performance is even more notable when you appreciate that Rodenas is brand new to pairs and in the past six weeks has had to deal with two sprained ankles and a mild concussion. With another year of seasoning under their belts, we can expect great things from this team in the future. The pair are coached by Ron Luddington and Phillip Dulebohn.

This season's Senior Ladies was the strongest field in many years with eight skaters being the national competitors in the past and three just had returned from their international assignments.  Representing our club, Jamie Kim skated a clean short program.  Her triple toe was down graded, and she was 10th going into Saturday's FS.  Jamie skated her free program with strong effort.  Her spiral sequence earned level four and the step sequence level three.  She received the highest personal combined score and finished 12th overall.
